Kay Farrow is a photographer with a difference -- she is literally colour blind, seeing the world only in shades of grey, a useful metaphor for someone who becomes involved in the shadowy underworld of crime. Kay is both an art photographer and a news freelance, which gives her an entrée into the whole range of San Francisco society.
In Trick Shot, Kay is horrified when her mentor, photojournalist Maddy Yamada, is killed in a mysterious hit-and-run incident in the drug-ridden red light district, a long way from her home in more ways than one. When she inherits Maddy's cameras, Kay discovers some strange negatives that lead her down sinister paths deep into the past as well as into present danger. At the same time, she is unwittingly turned into a tool in a gangland war for control of the Chinatown rackets.
Trick Shot sets an atmospheric exploration of love, death and betrayal against fast-paced thrilling action scenes, where suspense builds almost unbearably, threatening Kay's sense of herself as well as her very life. Although sometimes the answers come too easily to her, this is an absorbing and unusual novel that casts an interesting light on the way we look at the world.
