L.A. Requiem L.A. Requiem by Robert Crais
pbk out March 00 (Orion) at £5.99
Private eye Elvis Cole and his partner Joe Pike are called on to investigate a missing woman. But before they can make much headway, she is found dead. The case is complicated by the fact that she used to be Joe's girlfriend, and her father, who still regards Joe as family, has enough political clout to force the LAPD to open the investigation to the two PIs.BR> It doesn't help that the detective leading the inquiry hates Pike, himself a former cop. So when evidence starts to emerge that links Pike to a series of brutal stalker murders, Cole finds he's piggy in the middle. Inevitably, Cole is forced to question what he knows of the man who is his closest friend. Finding the answers drives Cole to the very edge of himself, where he has to decide what matters most in his life and how he can defend it.
L.A. Requiem is an utterly gripping narrative, written straight from the heart. The almost unbearable tension is tempered by the wit and humanity of Cole himself, confirming Robert Crais's place as a major American thriller writer. A must for summer reading.
