As debut novels go, The Art Of Cunning Lingers (be careful how you ask for the book in shops, by the way) by Dorset-based writer, Kaz Jordyn, is a great deal of fun. As a crime novel with a difference, it certainly comes up trumps.
Two weeks before her fairytale wedding to childhood sweetheart Adam Delancey and their move to a designer house in Hampstead, Maddie Hudson falls prey to a violent mugger on London's South Bank. She is rescued by Lexi Lomax, a young fashion student, who, on the surface appears the complete opposite of Maddie, yet nothing is what it seems. As the wedding fast approaches, Lexi's persistent meddling in Maddie's life takes on a sinister tone, threatening to destroy everything Maddie has worked towards and ultimately, her future happiness with the man of her dreams.
The most appealing aspect of the book is the characters and how they interact with each other so naturally. Maddie, from the outset, is a woman at odds with herself who simply grows on the reader like a blossoming rose, whereas Lexi is a deep pool of mystery you both like in an instant and also feel like telling to grow up at every opportunity. As for Adam and the loathsome Francine, I think it might be easy to associate either one with people we’ve all come across at one time or other.
With a storyline that, on the face of it, has been done on several occasions before and which Kaz Jordyn often refers to, the author has nonetheless has managed to combine a thrilling, fast paced story with a more than credible, witty and original scenario that keeps the reader guessing to the end and has added a pace that is breathless. At her first attempt, Kaz Jordyn, without doubt, has delivered a package that will delight on every page.
