The fourth novel of John Connor's Karen Sharpe series, Falling, is a clear
underlining of the author's growing reputation of master storyteller.
Karen Sharpe of the West Yorkshire Police is investigating a seemingly random
murder during a burglary and a frenzied attack on a model. Suspecting a racial
motivation to both crimes and with race relations at breaking point, Karen is going
through her own personal meltdown as her past threatens to catch up with her.
Clear, precise and very, very dark, Falling is a compelling read that takes the
reader on an emotional journey during which we may not exactly grow to like Karen
Sharpe but we do, nonetheless, grow to understand her.
Cut to the bone prose makes the story rattle along with barely space left over to catch
ones breath, whereas the gritty realism that the book invokes means the sights, smells
and sounds of the setting are brought out in vivid colour.
Totally absorbing, Falling is a great read and a testament to John Connor's
immense skills as a writer of some considerable worth.
