In 2000, Mary Turner Thomson joined an online dating agency.
That November, a man calling himself Will Jordan replied. They met at
his Edinburgh office and were soon dating regularly, though Will often
failed to turn up. He eventually told her that he was a CIA agent who had
to go abroad at short notice and wasn't always allowed to phone home.
The couple married and had two children, though Will wasn't
around for either birth. He even failed to show up for the first night of
their second honeymoon, leaving Mary alone in a romantic hotel suite.
His work took up more and more of his time - and, increasingly, left him
short of cash.
Over the next six years Mary gave him her life savings and the
money from the sale of her house, then borrowed from family and friends
to bail him out of various difficult situations. Only when he'd conned her
out of £198,000 did she find out that he was already married to - and had
children with - someone else. He also had offspring by various
mistresses, most of whom he'd similarly fleeced.
Whilst few of us would be as endlessly trusting as Mary, she's a
likeable and optimistic woman and this is an unputdownable book.
