You've seen the TV drama and documentary. Now read the book. In July
2001, Joanne was travelling through the Australian outback with her
boyfriend of six years, Peter Falconio, when another driver pulled them
over on a lonely stretch of highway. Peter got out of his van and spoke
briefly to the other man, who said that he'd seen sparks coming from their
exhaust. Peter asked Joanne to rev the engine then walked to the back of
the vehicle. Seconds later, she heard a shot. The man then grabbed and
bound her and threw her into his truck, but she managed to escape and
ran into the bush where she hid for the next five hours.
But when they couldn't find Peter's body, the Australian police began to
treat Joanne as a suspect. The media did likewise. This part of her
nightmare only ended when a man was convicted on DNA evidence.
This isn't really a book for true crime fans as we find out next to nothing
about the killer. Instead, it's about Joanne's journey from carefree
girlfriend to bereaved young woman, from happy-go-lucky traveller to
murder suspect in a strange land. It's a story of courage and personal
growth as she comes to terms with the loss of the man she loved and
slowly begins to forge new relationships.
