Can there be any more adventures to be related or mysteries to be solved in
the racing world? Surely all possible permutations of crooked dealings have
been explored? Well, it's yes to the first question and no to the second, and
here's the new John Francome to prove it. It's one of those tantalising
mysteries which begins with an incident, a possible murder in fact, (but
whose? and why, exactly?) and then moves away in time, place and
characters. But bear this murder in mind, as it's certainly relevant.
Andy and Pat, who are partnered with sisters Harriet and Zoë respectively,
work for Jack Lucas at his Beach Head stables. Andy is head lad, Pat a
jockey – and they have a scam going; it's not clear how it's working but they
are making piles of money and so don't take kindly to travelling head lad Joe's
attempt at blackmail. So when Andy falls (or was he pushed?) off a cliff to his
death, there is no shortage of possible explanations. It could be an accident
(Andy's dog almost took a header off the same cliff a short while ago), suicide
(his wife Harriet is having an affair) – or murder. And if it was the latter, who is
to blame? Joe, as revenge for the fight with Andy which got him sacked from
his job? Or is it Harriet's lover, the very dodgy Martin? This is exactly what DC
Laura Hammond needs to find out, with or without the help and support of her
colleagues.
This is another exciting and interesting crime thriller from John Francome. The
clichés about speed and pace have all been used before – but the thing about
clichés is, they're true!
