Set in 19th century Edinburgh, this introduces a new character, Inspector Faro's daughter, Rose McQuinn. Rose has just returned from America, as a widow. On arriving home she finds the family dispersed. Her father is living with an Irish Nationalist, and is on the run. Her brother is now a doctor to the royal household, and living in Windsor. Her sister has moved away, having married.
However, Rose is fortunate in a legacy which allows her independence. She has money and a new home. She has not been home long before an old friend asks for her help, and she finds herself involved in a case of murder. A wolfhound and a local policeman, who provides the love interest, aid her.
At first, it seems that the murderer is a member of a circus, an Indian from a Wild West show, but the plot twists and turns before the killer is revealed.
It is a well-written book, well researched and entertaining. Definitely one for lovers of historical crime fiction.
