pbk out November 04 (Creme de la Crime Books) at £7.99

Adrian Magson's debut outing for Riley Gavin, No Piece For The Wicked, is as an absorbing a read as you are likely to find anywhere on the Crime market today. Packed with feisty action, villains that are genuinely blood-chilling and a storyline that is as well plotted and described as any reader could wish for, No Peace For The Wicked is something of a must-read novel in every sense.
Riley Gavin, a young, female investigative reporter, sets out to uncover why two long- forgotten old gangsters have been executed in cold blood on England's south coast. Within hours of signing up to write the story, she finds that her flat has been burgled and a former laid-back military cop, Frank Palmer, whom she hires to watch her back, is warned off by men he suspects may be former British soldiers. As she digs deeper, Riley uncovers a deadly web of vendettas, double-crosses and hatred in an underworld at war with itself, with the prize being the control of a faltering criminal empire.
From first page to last, No Peace For The Wicked is a roller-coaster ride of excitement as the personalities of those being described take hold. The plot is simple, yet is handled in such a masterly way it is easy to see how the author has earned such a high reputation in his field, whereas the dialogue – as all good dialogue should – is at times snappy, at times humorous, but at all times relevant. It is this ability to make every word count that brings No Peace For The Wicked to the fore.
The first in a series of Riley Gavin novels, the anticipation of reading novel two is riding high. Watch this space.
