One of the greatest series around? Certainly one of the most
consistently readable and impressive. Fourteen books now (is it
fourteen ?) and not a dud or a slip in the whole lot. Amazing.
This one continues with Lt. Jim Chee trying to establish himself following
Joe Leaphorn's retirement whilst Leaphorn, for his part, is trying to
fill his retirement doing something useful. Both men are drawn into a
scary investigation following the murder of a police officer and the
disappearance of a biologist investigating, of all things, the Black
Death.
Hillerman is almost effortless in the way he portrays his
characters. The plot is satisfyingly engrossing. His familiarity with
Navaho culture, society and landscape is, as always, one of crime
writings great joys. Long may it continue.
