Chris Collett is a new name to me, but this book – it follows 'Worm in the Bud' and
'The Blood of the Innocents', which I shall have to seek out - suggests she is quite a
find. The central character is DI Tom Mariner, the setting is Birmingham and the
story opens with the discovery of a body followed by a bomb explosion. This is a
sound contemporary crime novel in the orthodox tradition. The challenges in
Mariner's personal life are explored in some depth, but without distracting the reader
from a thoroughly readable story.
