The Sleeping and the Dead by
Anne Cleeves

One of the most notable novels of psychological suspense to appear in 2001 is now
available in paperback. Cleeves is best known as the creator of two distinct crime
series, one with an ornithological setting, the other featuring Detective Inspector
Stephen Ramsay, but this is her second stand-alone book and it ranks with her very
best work. A body has bound found in a lake whose waters are unusually low and the
police officer deputed to investigate, Peter Porteous, uncovers a complex mystery
concerning the death 30 years ago of a mysterious teenager, Michael Grey. Michael's
former girlfriend, Hannah Morton, is a key figure in the story and Porteous starts to
wonder whether she has a criminal secret to hide. Recommended.
