Tony Hillerman ranks one of the major crime writers of the past thirty years or so, yet
oddly he has never achieved quite the celebrity in the UK that his writing deserves.
Perhaps the appearance of this new book will help to change that. Certainly, his long
series about the Navajo Tribal police officers Joe Leaphorn and Jim Chee presents a
picture of a fascinating society with rare accomplishment. It is good, therefore, to see
that, even though Leaphorn has officially retired from full-time active service, he is
still around to assist Chee and Bernie Manuelito on special investigations. In this
latest case, although the story about Leaphorn's efforts to resolve a cold case is
interesting enough, it is once again the evocative portrayal of the people and
environment of Navajo country that will linger longest in the memory.
