The sub-title, 'Inside New York City's Cold Case Squad' speaks for itself. Horn, a
well-known writer in the US, reckons her interest in cold cases 'is probably rooted in
a lifelong interest in the subject of death and my own desire not to disappear'. By
definition, cold cases are usually the toughest to crack, and neither Horn nor the
detectives she talks to are under many illusions. Each year the number of unsolved
cold cases does not fall – it rises. Time alters people's memories, we are told, and that
may hinder cold case investigations. Overall, however, cold case work is clearly
worthwhile and this is an interesting insight into the American experience of it.
