This is the third case for the Railway Detective, Inspector Robert Colbeck, who is
again assisted by his sidekick Sergeant Leeming. Set in 1852, it opens intriguingly,
with a painter witnessing a murder – a man is thrown from a moving train on a
railway route between Liverpool and Manchester. Investigations take Colbeck across
the Channel and the story moves at a rapid pace until the mystery is solved. Marston
has written dozens of books, in several series, but the Colbeck novels are up there
with the best of them and it is no surprise that an earlier title in the series was long-
listed for the Theakston's prize for best crime novel of the year.
