The Plague Maiden by
Kate Ellis
A medieval plague pit is discovered near Belsham church, at Pest Field, the site of a
proposed new supermarket for the Huntings chain. At much the same time, a mystery
poisoner begins to target Huntings and a new witness turns up claiming that the man
convicted of killing the vicar of Belsham more than a decade ago was the victim of a
miscarriage of justice. As if all that were not enough for Wesley to contend with, his
sergeant fancies him, his wife is pregnant and they take in an unsatisfactory new
lodger. The pace never falters as the medieval 'plague' theme is reflected not only in
the supermarket poisonings but also in another plot element that surfaces in the latter
part of the book. A 'historical note' at the end summarises the factual background,
rounding off a thoroughly enjoyable novel.
