The Moving Finger by

The web which features on the facsimile dust jacket of this book, first published in
war-time, encapsulates the complexity of a story about a plague of poison pen letters
in the hitherto peaceful village of Lymstock. The narrator is Jerry Burton, a
convalescing aviator, and Miss Marple does not make an appearance until late in the
story. This is a good example of the way in which Christie was apt to vary her
approach to writing detective stories and is one of the reasons why they retain a
freshness lacking in the work of so many of her contemporaries. A very enjoyable
detective story.
