Luca di Fulvio is much acclaimed in his native Italy and this very dark but interesting
novel shows why. The material is commonplace – yet another serial killer with a
penchant for mutilating his victims is at work in a city experiencing a rubbish strike –
but expertly handled. The detective, Chief Inspector Giacoma Amaldi, is very well-
drawn and Di Fulvio and his translator, Patrick McKeown, effectively convey the
atmosphere of the grubby, older parts of the town, as well as the chilling personality
of an intelligent but crazed killer.
