Having established a presence with contemporary crime fiction, Crème de la Crime
have now moved into the field of historical mysteries. The first in this strand was
Broken Harmony, an entertaining 18th century story set in Newcastle by Roz Southey,
and successors have included an enjoyable post-war private eye novel by Gordon
Ferris, Truth Dare Kills. Mary Andrea Clarke's book is set in the days when highway
robbery was not a question of the price of petrol. It introduces a spirited heroine,
Georgiana Gray, whose secret identity is that of the eponymous cavalier. Aided and
abetted by her maid Emily. Georgiana has to disprove the theory of her elder brother
Edward that the Crimson Cavalier killed pompous Sir Robert Foster, and find the real
culprit. Edward is keen to marry Georgiana off, with potentially calamitous results,
but she is having none of it. In the end, needless to say, she proves her detective
prowess. A light and lively debut.
