The Best British Mysteries: v. 4 by
Maxim Jakubowski

Four hundred pages long and very inexpensive for a hardback, the fourth in editor
Jakubowski's gatherings of the best British crime fiction from the past year is at least
as enjoyable as its acclaimed predecessors. I must declare an interest in that the book
includes a story of mine, but even readers who ignore that one altogether will find
themselves spoiled for choice by the generous selection. The contributors include the
great and the good – Colin Dexter, Robert Barnard, Anne Perry, Alexander McCall
Smith, Lee Child and Robert Goddard – as well as less famous (for the moment)
authors such as Kevin Wignall and Adrian McKinty. Several of the best mid-list
writers around are also featured – examples include Judith Cutler and Danuta Reah,
whose CWA Dagger winning entry 'No Flies on Frank' is splendidly wry, along with
Chris Simms, author of the terrific 'Baba's Bites'. A bargain.
