Even when this book first appeared, as long ago as 1975, it was to some extent an
exercise in nostalgia, harking back to the Golden Age of detective fiction. It was the
first of three novels featuring Detective Inspector Wilkins, and over the years it has
acquired a devoted following. It is good to see it back in print, in an elegant trade
paperback edition. James Anderson has effectively captured the spirit of that period
between the wars when, for all the lightness of the murder puzzles of the age, there
was an undercurrent of darkness – exemplified here by the opening line: 'How well
do you know Adolf Hitler?' Fans of the neatly crafted traditional whodunit will find
this an undemanding and pleasurable read.
