The work of coroners is fascinating, and the challenges they face never-ending.
Priscilla Masters has recognised this, and has had the excellent idea of creating a
protagonist who is not only a busy coroner, but also a woman facing personal
challenges of her own. Martha Gunn, who first appeared in the excellent 'River Deep,
is a widow; now her son Sam is leaving home to take up the chance of a lifetime, in
Liverpool FC's soccer academy. She becomes involved with a death in custody after a
thirteen year old boy, charged with stabbing a classmate outside school, is found in
his cell with a ligature round his neck. Martha is determined to see justice done and
the result is a highly readable mystery. Masters is best known for her books featuring
DI Joanna Piercy, but it is a safe bet that the Martha Gunn series will become equally
popular.
