The latest debut novel to appear under the promising imprint of Crème de la Crime is
a fast-moving thriller featuring Nick Randall, an insurance claims investigator. Nick's
late father was a well-known comedian but what was not so well known was a sordid
secret which many years later causes his old friends, and his family to be tracked
down by a brutal killer intent on revenge. At the start of the book we are introduced
to a great many characters very quickly, but once the story settles down it starts to
exert a real grip. Occasionally brutal, but very readable, it contains at least one scene
that will have some readers wincing. I felt that the final part of the book, after the
revelation of the culprit's identity and motive, was a little drawn out and that some of
the points made were rather hammered home – a common feature of first novels – but
this writer seems to me to have real potential. He is not only a capable story-teller, but
also has a knack for creating people who are flawed but nevertheless appealing. I look
forward to his next book.
