I could scarcely believe my eyes when I saw the price of this reprint of Davis' very
well-reviewed novel of 1997. Quite a bargain, for although the material is not for the
squeamish – the protagonist, Douglas, has a taste for necrophilia – this is a very well-
written book by an author who deserves to be much better known. Douglas works,
conveniently, in a mortuary, and Davis charts his descent into murderous madness
with wry insight. Crime fiction does not get much darker than this.
