It is good news that Harper Perennial are planning to publish the complete series of
ten Martin Beck novels, starting with this very readable book in which the gloomy
Swedish cop made his debut. Each novel will include an introduction by a leading
writer, provided fittingly in this case by Henning Mankell, who has followed so
successfully in the footsteps of Sjowall and Wahloo. He explains how he read this
novel shortly after its first publication in 1965 and it is apparent that the style and
content, as well as the political undertones, of the Beck series influenced his Kurt
Wallender books. This story, which involves the murder of a young woman, is more
conventional than some of the later Beck books, but remains enjoyable today.
