I have not read Kernick's four earlier novels, but after enjoying this lively thriller, I
shall be looking out for them. The premise here is that an ordinary man called Tony
Meron receives a phone call from his friend, whom he hears screaming for help, then
giving Meron's address and finally being murdered. Meron is rapidly plunged into a
nightmarish sequence of adventures as he comes face to face with determined and
vicious criminals. The style reminds me of the stand-alone TV thrillers, like 'Bat out
of Hell' and 'A Game of Murder' written by Francis Durbridge (also the creator of
Paul Temple) in the 1960s - but brought up to date. The twists are numerous and the
resolution of the mystery is less important than the excitement offered along the way.
