Adrian Magson's protagonists are Riley Gavin, a female investigative journalist and a
tough ex-Redcap called Frank Palmer (a name shared, incidentally, by an under-
estimated crime novelist). This unpretentious thriller is their third outing so far, and
Magson is getting into his stride. The book is well-paced, the style is readable and the
story – which kicks off with Riley and Palmer confronting a dubious businessman
called Gillivray, who proves not to be long for this world – lively enough to maintain
interest throughout. The relationship between elegant Riley and crumpled Palmer is
nicely portrayed and I look forward to their next appearance.
