Thomas Harris has a lot to answer for. The creation of Hannibal Lecter paved the way
for countless serial killer novels, and sometimes it seems that there is a tacit
competition to see who can come up with the most sadistic variations upon a familiar
theme. Gretchen Lowell is a candidate for the title of female serial killer by whom one
would least wish to be captured. A couple of years ago she tortured cop Archie
Sheridan over a number of days before mysteriously winding up in prison. Archie is,
not surprisingly, still having trouble getting over his horrific ordeal when another
serial killer starts disposing of female victims. A young reporter, Susan Ward, is
tasked to write about Archie, but gradually it becomes evident that the roots of the
crimes may be connected with her own past. Chelsea Cain may be a newcomer to
crime fiction, but this book is efficiently contrived and seems destined for best-seller
status.
