The latest entry in the wonderful Dalziel and Pascoe series is an extraordinarily
elaborate affair. It offers a fresh spin on the classic 'locked room mystery', with two
mysterious suicides ten years apart, occurring in the same eerie place, Moscow House
in mid-Yorkshire, the victims father and son, the circumstances of the latter's death an
apparent carbon copy of those of the former. But there are also complicated corporate
shenanigans, involving government spooks, the arms trade and Iraq. For much of the
story it seems as though Andy Dalziel will be compromised by his relationship with
Kay Kafka, gorgeous widow of the man who killed himself a decade ago. The truth
turns out to be fiendishly complicated - perhaps a bit too complicated. The real joy of
this book is not so much in the teasing puzzle, but rather in the interplay between the
characters and in the brightly burning flame of Hill's wit.
