This chunky book runs to 542 pages and gathers a wide range of stories to celebrate
the Golden Jubilee of 'Alfred Hitchcock's Mystery Magazine'. The editor has chosen
stories with a view to providing a representative sampling of those that have appeared
in AHMM over the past five decades. The collection demonstrates that, although
AHMM is less well-known in the UK than its stable-mate Ellery Queen's Mystery
Magazine (which tends to include many more stories by British authors), it has
attracted many writers of distinction. The examples start with that master of noir, Jim
Thompson, whose 'The Frightening Frammis' appeared in the very first issue. Other
famous names include Evan Hunter (the same writer also features under his alter ego,
Ed McBain), Lawrence Block and Edward D. Hoch, who is represented by one of the
finest of his many short stories, 'The Long Way Down'. Among the notable
contemporary writers are S.J. Rozan, Jan Burke and Rhys Bowen. An excellent book
for fans of short American crime fiction.
