Novels about serial killers have become depressingly commonplace, but this second
book by a talented American writer is more distinctive and better written than much
of the competition. Detective Carson Ryder narrates his investigation into a macabre
killing, which leads him and partner Harry Nautilus to consider a connection with the
crimes of a dead serial killer, the artist Marsden Hexcamp. Ryder has to contend not
only with a cunning adversary, but also with the break-up of his last relationship and
the start of a new one, to say nothing of the tantrums of his incarcerated, homicidal
brother Jeremy. The Alabama setting is well evoked and the plotting accomplished. If
you like this type of book, Kerley is a writer to watch.
