The idea of the Quick Reads series is appealing – short and snappy stories, told in
straightforward language and sold at bargain prices. Several of the early entries have
been written by leading crime writers and the latest to appear is an action thriller by
Val McDermid, told in the first person by cop Andy Martin. The book opens with the
killing in a fire of a gangster's daughter, and a series of increasingly gruesome deaths
follow. Although the ending is a little rushed, I found this story a lively commuting
read, written in McDermid's usual lively and accessible style. Light, enjoyable fare.
