From a small publisher comes another entry in the increasingly crowded field of books about the use of forensic science in criminal investigation. But it is a book with a difference, written by the wife of a prominent forensic odontologist, David Lewin, who specialises in the study of bitemarks. The style of writing is idiosyncratic, occasionally verging on the eccentric, and is leavened with humour. The author, who has 'recently embarked on stand-up comedy with trumpet and penguin' is clearly a jolly individual, but she is aware of the seriousness of some of the stories she tells and she also imparts a good deal of interesting information. The book would have benefited from more ruthless editing, but its unconventional style accounts for the fact that it is curiously striking, a book with much more personality than many others in its category.
