Behind You! by

This is a detective novel which, twenty years ago, would have sat comfortably in the
list of Collins Crime Club or Gollancz's yellow jackets. Both imprints have, sadly,
disappeared, but thankfully Crème de la Crime is among those publishers who have
emerged to fill the gap, providing readers with books by a range of new and capable
writers. Linda Regan makes good use of her professional knowledge of the acting
business with a story set in the claustrophobic world of theatre in the pantomime
season. When a member of the cast of 'Dick Whittington' is murdered, Detective
Inspector Banham and his sidekick DS Alison Grainger come to investigate. The
mystery puzzle is competently contrived, but what will linger longest in my memory
is the tentative relationship between Banham and Grainger, which is sensitively done.
A sound debut; I look forward to Linda Regan's next book.
