In a relatively short time, Kate Ellis has carved out a considerable reputation as an author of crime
novels and short stories which combine careful plotting with plausible characterisation. This, her sixth
novel featuring Detective Inspector Wesley Peterson, more than matches the quality of its predecessors
and seems sure to strengthen her reputation yet further.
The setting is the seemingly tranquil village of Derenham – which, like so many idyllic spots in
English detective fiction turns out to have more than its fair share of dark secrets. A former rock star,
Jonny Shelley, is found shot dead and teenager Lewis Hoxworthy goes missing, after making contact
with a stranger through the internet. Peterson's task involves trying to ascertain whether the two events
are connected while an archaeologist, Neil Watson investigates the twisted tale of Derenham's
medieval past. This is a satisfying and enjoyable read.
