If there has ever been a more original crime anthology concept than this one, I don't
know what it is. Claudia Bishop and Don Bruns have done much more than collect
thirteen music-focused short mysteries. There are short interviews with each of the
authors, but above all there is a CD featuring performances by the authors. Some of
the contributors are already well-known for their association with music. A notable
example is the very successful composer and performer Rupert Holmes, who has
recently turned to crime fiction with aplomb, another is jazz drummer Bill Moody.
There are contributions from best-selling writers such as Peter Robinson, Val
McDermid and Jeffrey Deaver, and the anthology would stand on its own feet simply
for the quality of the stories. But the inclusion of the CD transforms a good book into
something uniquely entertaining. Highly recommended.
