Tim Heald, creator of that rather unlikely detective Simon Bognor, has rather slipped
off mystery fans' radar in recent years as he has concentrated on a wide range of non-
fiction projects. This is a pity, for the Bognor books – which led to a short-lived TV
series in the early 1980s – were light, enjoyable fare. Happily, Heald has re-emerged,
with a new sleuthing hero, Doctor Tudor Cornwall, Reader in Criminal Studies at the
University of Wessex. In this, Tudor's third appearance at novel length, the setting is
a cruise ship called the Duchess. He has been brought on board as a guest speaker,
and is accompanied by his Australian research assistant Elizabeth Burney, whom he
secretly fancies. When a series of mishaps occurs on the Duchess, Tudor investigates,
discovering a new rule of life along the way: 'don't expect to arrive where you expect
when you begin your journey.' This is agreeable entertainment that will appeal
especially to those who are fed up with ever more gruesome serial killer novels.
