A Death out of Season by
Meg Elizabeth AtkinsAs in a number of her previous books, Meg Elizabeth Atkins has chosen a typically English setting for a murder mystery. That setting, the apparently tranquil market town of Clerehaven, plays a more central part in the story than is often the case in traditional detective novels, and this is a strength of the book. Characterisation also is a plus. Inez Bryant, one of the central figures in the story, is a likeable woman, usually accompanied around the town by a small dog known as 'the armadillo'. Much less appealing is Jaynie Turner, who moved to the town two years ago - 'to everyone it seemed much, much longer'. Since Jaynie is a woman who has 'never seen the point in paying regard to anyone's feelings', it is not entirely a surprise when she is murdered. The investigation is led by Detective Chief Inspector Sheldon Hunter and it turns out that the explanation for the crime lies in Clerehaven's past. This is an agreeable read from a highly experienced author.
