When Will There Be Good News? by Kate Atkinson
hbk out August 08 Published by Doubleday at £17.99

Six-year-old Joanna Mason is the only survivor when Andrew Decker attacks her family. Thirty years later Decker is released from prison and promptly vanishes. Is he hunting down Joanna to finish what he started? This is the third in Whitbread award winner Atkinson’s series featuring former police inspector Jackson Brodie, though it is fair to say that the narrative is shared evenly between several equally appealing and well-wrought characters. In Edinburgh, quick-witted, sixteen-year-old Reggie is virtually alone in the world but finds comfort in her work looking after Dr Hunter’s baby. Then Dr Hunter and her baby go missing. Detective Chief Inspector Louise Monroe is struggling to cope with a family visit while she tries to track down a killer on the run. And Jackson Brodie is on an eventful journey the length and breadth of the UK. Atkinson expertly sets these stories on collision course. Writing that is full of joie-de-vivre and pin-sharp humour. A delight to savour.
