Reminiscent of The Talented Mr Ripley, Joncour’s novel is a delicious read. Boris, a handsome stranger, turns up at the island retreat of a family and introduces himself as an old school friend of their son (and brother) Philip. With acerbic and malicious intent, Boris worms his way into the well-heeled household; seducing some and repulsing others. Idyllic descriptions of the languorous family holiday, the enervating heat and the local scenery provide a perfect canvas for the dissection of the family’s relationships and the build towards a violent denouement. Joncour narrates his tale with lucid prose and wicked humour. A succinct but satisfying book – ideal for a weekend away. We are told a film adaptation is already underway.
