A young cadet is found hanging at Venice’s elite military academy but news of the death is slow to reach Commissario Brunetti. When he does reach the training school he is irritated by the arrogant and unfeeling attitude of staff and students to the apparent suicide. The cadet was a similar age to Brunetti’s own boy. Discovering the youngster is the son of one of the few honest men the nation has produced, Brunetti is tempted to probe a little deeper. But the academy close ranks, civilians are unwilling to talk and even the cadet’s family seem reluctant to encourage Brunetti. Is that simply due to the Italian mistrust of authorities or the result of a more sinister intrigue? Aided by the indispensable Signorina Electra and sustained by the love of his family, the detective persists in his pursuit of truth and justice. Classic, classy detective fiction with its unique Venetian setting and a humane and down-to-earth protagonist.
