Lieutenant Jonathan Stride’s sister-in-law Laura was beaten to death as a teenager. Years later, and with his wife dead, Jonathan is astonished when Tish Verdure, Laura’s friend reappears in his life with claims that she can shed new light on Laura’s death. No one was ever convicted of the crime, though there were many rumours at the time about who had done it. Tish is writing a book about the murder and as she interviews people about Laura she finds herself on the receiving end of deadly threats. Someone wants to let the past stay untroubled. A wonderfully twisty thriller which leads into a very dark place of horrific family violence. It took me a moment and a bit of flicking back and forth to realise that Tish’s book is not written from her own point-of-view but that confusion aside this is a fluently written and assured suspense story which builds to a breathtaking action-packed finale and keeps the surprises coming thick and fast.
