Pelecanos has built a reputation for himself chronicling the experience of blue collar Americans, and especially those of Greek descent, in a series of thrillers that also address the most critical issues of the day: the tensions of race, and the problems of poverty, drugs and crime. The Turnaround begins in Washington DC in 1972 when a trio of stoned white teenagers drive into a black neighbourhood and provoke a confrontation that leads to one of the three being shot and killed. In the present day the legacy of that incident and its impact on those involved continues to resonate. One of the people is looking for vengeance, another for reconciliation. Pelecanos (who also writes for the outstanding TV series The Wire) is an accomplished storyteller and the compassion he brings to his writing makes the book deeply moving as well as engaging. The characters and their fates linger long after the last page.
