Constance Langton grows up in a house riven by mourning. The death of her sister has plunged her mother into deep melancholy and her father remains aloof and remote. Desperate to try and help, Constance persuades her mother to attend a séance but the outcome is tragic and Constance faces an uncertain future alone. When she receives a bequest granting her ownership of Wraxford Hall she learns that the house has a history of mysterious disappearances and a reputation as a cursed place. Constance is swept along in a scheme to unravel the mystery. The narrative is shared by Constance, Eleanor (a previous mistress of Wraxford Hall) and the solicitor to the estate, John Montague. Perfect fire-side reading: finely written, historically fascinating and very spooky.
