The Scarecrow by Michael Connelly
hbk out May 09 Published by Orion at £18.99

Connelly pens a swansong for the world of newspapers, a world he knows inside out as a former police reporter for the Los Angeles Times. In The Scarecrow, Jack McEvoy (working at the same desk as the author) has 30 days left on the job due to take-overs and cutbacks, but he intends to go out with a bang. He begins to investigate the story of a typical city murder: the rape and strangulation of a crack user by a 16 year old drug dealer from the projects. Intending to tell the story of how society breeds such killers, Jack imagines a Pulitzer awaiting him but things take an unexpected turn. The youngster has been framed and Jack finds himself on the hunt for a serial killer who hides in the labyrinthine world of digital data protection. Connelly is a terrific writer, compelling and entertaining. The insight into the disappearing world of the newsroom, and the affectionate references to its place in our culture from other books and films, are utterly fascinating. Jack McEvoy has featured in three previous Connelly titles but The Scarecrow will appeal to new readers and loyal fans alike and to anyone in the future who wonders what it was like when every big city had its own paper and they were the ones that broke the news.
