For those who have read Hannah’s previous novels, Little Face and Hurting Distance, there is a serial element here with the return of detectives Charlie Zailer and Simon Waterhouse and developments in their mercurial relationship. But Hannah’s primary focus, in the first person sections of the book, is on Sally Thorning, who is caught up in a dangerous and mystifying world when she sees a news item on television. Geraldine Bretherick and daughter Lucy are dead, a suspected murder-suicide, husband and father Mark Bretherick bears no resemblance to the man Lucy spent a week with the previous year. Yet all the other details of his life are the same. Hannah’s terrain is the domestic world, the world of families and the secrets they maintain, and she illuminates with unflinching honesty the pressures and challenges that face working mothers. Her characterisation is first-rate and there is much to be enjoyed in the tetchy interaction of the police team. The sinuous plot contains a jaw-dropping revelation and some neat final twists.
