Nikki and Saffie were twins, daughters of army officer David and his young wife
Fleur. Living in the Far East, life appears to be idyllic until David is killed in a flying
accident and then little Saffie disappears from a Malaysian beach. Years later Nikki,
now pregnant but still haunted by the loss of her twin, prepares for a meeting of
reconciliation with the mother she blames for Saffie's disappearance. When Fleur
abandons the appointment Nikki has to fly out to Singapore to find her. Once there,
the ghosts of the past are awakened and the process of uncovering the truth and the
discovering the fate of Saffie gains an unstoppable momentum.
MacDonald's third novel is an engaging read and an intriguing mystery, perceptive in
its account of strained family relationships, with an exotic location lovingly detailed.
