Jack Reacher, crime fighter extraordinaire, is drawn into a case of kidnapping on the
streets of New York. Reacher may have seen the man who abducted Kate Lane and
her daughter Jade as he collected the ransom. Wealthy and powerful Edward Lane
and his ex-military associates are hard men with a range of skills but Lane is so
impressed by Reacher's handling of the situation that he hires him to help find his
wife. It's a complicated situation and one which leads Reacher across the Atlantic to
the sleepy English countryside. The Hard Way is a joy to read, Reacher is
accomplished, intelligent and very, very cool. There are some superb cliff-hangers
and reversals of fortune and Child's conceit of writing an American's take on a visit
to England is highly entertaining (Child is himself a Brit who has completely
mastered the American idiom).
