The
Coroner, M.R. Hall’s first novel, was shortlisted for Crime
Novel of the Year at ITV3 Specsavers Crime Thriller Awards 2009, this sequel picks
up where that left off and is equally entertaining. Jenny Cooper is still struggling
to manage her challenging role in her new job as coroner and fathom her prickly
relationship with her teenage son meanwhile using medication and therapy to try
and cope with the panic attacks that render her helpless.
In The
Disappeared, Jenny is approached by the mother of a young British
student Nazim Jamal, who disappeared along with another student seven years earlier.
Mrs Jamal wants an inquest to be held into the circumstances surrounding her son’s
presumed death, refusing to believe the police who say the students were under
surveillance and left the country to train with like-minded extremists. Jenny’s
attempts to assist Mrs Jamal meet with disdain from her judgmental assistant Alison
and with obstruction from the police and security services. But one man, a flamboyant
and at times menacing former solicitor who has done time in prison, wants to help.
Jenny finds herself increasingly attracted to him. Is he really as untrustworthy
as everyone claims? Jenny is an excellent hero, battling all-comers though often
close to breaking herself and Hall’s ability as a storyteller ensures a
most satisfying
