Tried any short stories recently? Every year Otto Penzler brings out one of these
collections and invites a different author to co-edit. As with many anthologies there is
a satisfying range with something to appeal to everyone. Authors renowned and less
so create small but perfectly formed narratives. This year's selection includes
contributions from James Crumley, Elmore Leonard, Joyce Carol Oates, Walter
Mosley and George P. Pelecanos but worth special mention are After You've Gone,
by John Peyton Cooke, a sly story with a sting in its tail where sexual confusion
triggers violence; the excellent, innovative Home Sweet Home by Hannah Tinti,
where a relay race of narrators take us through the kaleidoscope turns of a double
murder in a suburban neighbourhood; and That One Autumn, by Monica Wood, an
account about a woman held captive in her holiday cottage which celebrates the
astonishing power of marital love.
